Configure Windows key in Linux

Shortcut Keys in Linux

I have been using windows for a long time and recently my interests has been shifted towards various flavours of linux. I intended to start my linux experiments with Ubuntu, since i am novice user to linux i had difficulty in following the shortcut keys.

I have been used to the windows shortcuts and felt it would be better to have those keys support until i get used to linux. Most of the keys like
Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are supported in Ubuntu by default, but i was used to the windows key and found difficulties in configuring the same.

I started surfing and there are many forums and threads about the same but none were clear to me as i felt some difficulty in following the instructions, and sharing the same here so that other people like me might get throgh this easily

Step 1: Enable windows key to be maped to win key behaviour

Linux doesn't support using windows key with any other key combinations by default like you cannot use it like
Windows+D and Windows+L. So first step is to make the windows key as hot keys.

1.Launch keyboard preference window
System->Preference->Keyboard
2. In the keyboard preference window select the layouts tab as shown below
3. select the layout options
4. select the Alt/win Key behaviour
5. Enable the super is mapped to win keys.
Step 2: Start assigning the windows key combinations

You can start assigning the windows key combinations to some of the predefined shortcuts or you can define shortcut for your own need. To create the custom keys for the predefined shortcuts follow the steps below. Here I will try to configure Windows+L to lock the desktop

1. Launch the keyboard shortcuts
System->preferences->Keyboard shortcuts
2. Navigate down to select the Lock Screen option under the Desktop

3. select the value in the shortcut column.

4. Press
windows key+L
5. now the shortcut key for Lock screen will be displayed as
Mod4+L

Windows key in Linux made easy

6. now you can start using Windows+L to lock your desktop

You can select the add option below to add shortcut for your own command. Define a name for your shortcut and the command to be executed and then assign the command will appear in the list and then create a shortcut key for the same as described above.
Now I am happily using my windows key in the ubuntu and created many new shortcuts which is really of great help to me.
